I have 12 chicks as of this morning. Both incubators are about even for how many have hatched. I totally forgot how huge chicken chicks are compared to quail. The one thing I don’t like about chickens is how long they take to grow.
My garden is pretty small this year so I haven’t gotten to much but it’s always fun to pick what’s growing. I have so many tomatoes they aren’t ripe yet though. I have quite a few pumpkins too so that’s exciting. Next year I definitely want to upgrade my garden.

Today the eggs started hatching!! Almost all look like they are starting to hatch in my white incubator, but I see no signs in my blue one :/ The white did have the most recently laid eggs and the blue one had eggs laid roughly between 1-4 week prior to when I starting incubating them. I’m still hoping for the best though!

So this morning one of the baby chicks had gotten out, I went to go catch it and the rooster attacked me. I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t even look at him or even think about him and I was just going to go get the chick and my leg got hurt out of no where and I looked and he was all puffed up at me. Couldn’t believe him, but I do feel super sad for him because he had a limp this morning, so maybe because he’s hurt he’s a little more aggressive. I’m not sure how he got a limp, but I hope he gets better soon. He’s still my favorite even if he’s the meanest to me out of all the chickens.
My cat is still just chilling on the incubator all the time. These golden comet chicken eggs should be hatching hopefully this weekend! I’m hoping for a good hatch rate because I did make up my mind and I want to keep all the ones besides the few I have to give to the person who gave me the eggs. I also call my cat my cat because I never use her name ever. Her name is Co named after he father Bo. I just call her cat or kitty.

I think I’ve finally named all the kittens. So that’s good lol. They are all super cute and super friendly.
That’s my main rooster. He’s the one the scares me sometimes he try’s to attack me when I’m filling the waters. He also just is always following me as close as he can. So I’m not sure if he loves me or hates me. But I love him probably a lot more then I should. He’s my favorite chicken by far even if he’s sometimes scary.

The hen has successfully still kept 5 chicks alive. Even though one has gotten stuck somewhere like 3 different times and I’ve had to save it.
I always get looked at by every chicken when I go to collect eggs. It’s kinda funny.

For the boy goats I have now completely finished there upgraded area. It’s about 3x bigger now. Then repurposed some things that were just laying around into a goat house.. they had one but it was a little smaller.
All fencing and current animal housing has all been stuff that I’ve found around the property and reused so that’s a fun fact.

Quail are my favorite for being fast turn around. I think they’re eggs are super cute and their meat is tasty.
Bart is currently obsessed with cuddling. He is always on me as soon as I lay down. He used to be only interested in cuddling with Zelma. It’s a nice change.

Cats are probably my favorite animal. They always keep me entertained. The first picture of the cats is bart and one of the kittens. I still haven’t named them…. Then the next one is of my cat I’ve had the longest. She is 4 years old and I caught this picture mid yawn. Her favorite place is on top of the incubator.

Last night was cute, Zelma my pregnant cat cuddled in with Rue. I’m counting the days down for those kittens to be born too. Should definitely be coming up pretty soon.

I think tuck is the cutest! He slept like that when I did chores outside. He’s getting so big now!!
The hen has now 4 chicks! These two are the only ones I’ve seen go out from underneath her. There’s two eggs left, so I’m excited to see if those hatch too!

The set of 8 quail that was the first group I hatched started laying! Got two eggs first day!!! I’m excited to see how many start laying from that group. My broodie hen had her first chick hatch! It’s super cute to watch her with a little one. So far there aren’t any other signs of more hatching, so I’ll have to see if she ends up with more then one.

My favorite part of my morning is feeding my boy goats. They need an expansion of there pen, just the past few days they have really demolished every last bit of green in there pen. I was hoping it would have been good enough for them with hay until November when I’m combining the boy and girl goats but it doesn’t look like that’ll work. It’ll be hopefully this weekends project to expand the boys area.
Last night I let the dogs out, when I called them back I smelt something…. My oldest boy got sprayed by a skunk. I’d call that an excellent Friday treat ;) He really does stink though, so that is my project for right now.

I started incubating 54 eggs for a friend, they want a couple and I can keep or sell the rest. I’m not exactly sure what I’m going to do yet. Either way I love the incubating and hatching process and would do it all year around if I had the demand.

Quail are definitely bringing the eggs in now. Getting over a dozen per day currently. The eggs continue to be delicious and cute.
This other rooster is getting pretty big. I was hoping this was a girl, until I noticed changes a few months ago. One of the first chickens to crow from that batch. He’s pretty friendly and loves the hens.

The girl goats are always up to something… they still love to come say hi like this when they hear me taking care of the chickens. Another thing I learned is that Cayuga ducks ( my black ones ) if they are male have green heads and girls are black. According to that I should have 2 boys and 1 girl. I still have quite a few months before they start laying to know for sure. I’m not sure on the pekin ducks. Another way is boys are suppose to have a few curled feathers in their tail, but none of them look curled for my white or black ducks. So…. I will have to see what happens.

My girl goats are now obsessed with me, spending plenty of time with them each day and they follow me everywhere. The last batch of quail for the year I think is done hatching. Little better then a 60% hatch rate… so I’m slowly getting better. Dreaming of the 95-98% days.

I did some exploring in an area I haven’t ventured to yet, I found tons of raspberry bushes everywhere. I randomly drove to another area later and found another huge patch so I’m excited to see what I can do with them! Otherwise I think the best purchase for quail were the hideouts. They love hanging out in or around them.

Put together a hay loft to store the hay! Todays day 17 for the other batch of quail and I have 14 so far hatched. Hatching anything is always super exciting. Sadly I think this is the last batch of quail I’ll be doing this year.

I got my first few dozen chicken eggs sold! Excited for more and more chicken eggs. Before I know it I’ll be getting dozens daily. I also bought my first batch of hay. The goats love it. The ducks love it. The chickens enjoy it lol. Hoping these bales last until winter, then I’ll have to reup to keep the goats fed all winter.

I decided to make a day trip up north. My favorite thing is fishing, if the fishing good. Lucky for me it always is here. Just catching and releasing today, didn’t wanna clean fish today lol.

I set up my younger chicks with the goats and older chickens to get them used to each other. I feel a lot better about having the chicks in an outdoor pen then in the quail coop. The goats have decided to play on it constantly though. It was put together pretty quick so it’s not the sturdiest so I’m assuming the goats will probably break it.
Then there’s my rooster. I love him. He’s the biggest and always hangs out with the adult hens. He is protective and good at alerting of potential dangers. He’s not to sure of me yet. Almost daily I try to get him to eat out of my hand but he just looks at me. The hen in the back that has some feathers missing on her head is one of my first chickens I brought onto this property. She lost her head feathers last winter when I took in a few to many roosters for someone and the hen to rooster ratio wasn’t close to where it should be.

Today I went to a baby shower… I got a prize..!!! The goal was to make the best “baby” out of bubble gum in a certain amount of time I’m not sure exactly but it was under 5 minutes. Butttt I won because I made twins. I don’t know… pretty proud of my masterpieces so I thought I’d share :)
Otherwise I’m just waiting for more quail to hatch. I have over 40 now. Still about 2 or so more days until they should be done. Hoping at least 20 more hatch.

Well todays day 16 for the big batch of quail and I’ve had 16 make it to the brooder so far. I wasn’t expecting any to hatch today so every hatch has made me super excited! The incubator is getting less cramped now lol. Still lots to go!!

I got some close up animal pictures lol.. The older quail I bought are doing well and settling in good. They are starting to grow feathers back slowly but surely. My goat marge wanted to say hi from the chicken entrance.

Happy 4th of July! 🎉
I added another batch of quail eggs in my other incubator. I will see how many I end up with this time.. the display on the incubator didn’t match a humidity/temp gauge I put in there last time… then it stopped working and I didn’t realize so the humidity wasn’t near where it needed to be for the last hatch, so keeping a real close eye on it this time. Lots of little things like that can effect your hatch rate greatly.. I have only had good hatch rates with chickens at 88% hatch rate my first and only round with them. The first batch of quail was a 22% hatch rate with the humidity and temperature not working correctly. Hoping I’m able to get at least 50% on both of the batches I have in the incubator currently. The ones that did hatch are doing great still. Super cute and pretty entertaining. I love hearing listening to them chirp. There’s one that always sleeps with it’s feet straight out so I thought I’d share.
