Most of the time, when I have a little history lesson to offer I just do a brief Google scholar fact check to make sure I’ve got the details right.
According to Google AI, the history of hot chocolate is from “The Middle Ages when firewood logs looked decorative and began taking on a chocolately taste.”
I can assure you that is not, in fact, where hot chocolate and its association with Christmas comes from but it was too outrageous so now you’ll just have to wonder what the actual history was.
(Okay really it’s been around forever but in Belfast in the 1800s it was sold as a hot holiday drink - bitter cocoa with milk added to sweeten the taste - as a holiday treat.)
Now THIS is a real Christmas treat!
A 1940s World War II Sweetheart lingerie set. They’re made of silk and hand embroidered and really hard to find in wearable shape.
Typically, the stitching has come undone, or the silk has fallen apart, or they’re just in really delicate condition because they weren’t stored properly over the last 80 years.
They were made in all different vibrant colors with different cheeky sayings on them and were sent by soldiers who are stationed overseas in the Pacific Theatre home to their girlfriends.
The fact that this baby blue set fits and it’s an awesome shape it was such a treat – so enjoy the pictures as much as I enjoyed making them!

The song “Santa Baby” was written for Eartha Kitt in 1953, and at the time the songwriters thought it was a bust. They allegedly wrote it in 10 minutes sitting in a Manhattan apartment, before trying to move onto writing other Christmas songs to hit their music label quota. Pretty wild that now it’s one of the most famous Christmas songs all these years later!
A quick little fun history on Christmas ornaments: fruits and and nuts were traditionally used in the days of old to decorate the tree as a sign of good will for the coming spring harvest. A German glassblower down on his luck couldn’t afford fresh fruit to string, and instead made his own out of glass (how that’s cheaper I’m not sure but…) and the glass ornaments took off in popularity.
This trend continued into WW2, when an obvious stop to German imports was made. From there, ornaments made of other materials like plastics rose in popularity.

This is my baking Christmas cookies outfit. Like a regular June Cleaver!
I know Americans really cornered the market on Christmas cookies but they actually date back to the Danes from the 17th century! The association with gingerbread for the holiday supposedly comes from this Brothers’ Grimm tale of Hansel and Gretel (no joke!) and people making their own decorative festive cookies for the holiday. 🎄
For the record, I made all my own Christmas cookies one year. All different kinds. I even wore something like this while I did it. Not only is a bakery-bought better, but I was covered and flour and a skimpy outfit does not, in fact, protect your buns from a hot oven behind you! 🙃🤭
