We've invested about 3000 bucks in hard- and software last week to get old SD footage to 4K. AI makes that impossible task possible. Welcome to 2022. Been experimenting all weekend and finally watched this scene (after a long render) on a 65" OLED TV. The results are pretty spectacular. There's not much we can do about camera shake, keep in mind that image stabilization wasn't a thing two decades ago. But the resolution, clarity, de-noising etc., WOW. You might have to open OF on a huge screen to get the most out of the remaster but even if you're viewing the uprezzed content on a phone or tablet the resolution has gone up from 720 × 576 (SD) to 3840x2160 (UHD). We tried even tried the middle ground but 4K actually looks much better than just a 1080p upscale. Sounds logical until you realize that the AI is simply interpreting and "inventing" all the details that arent there in the source material. So 4K is even more of a computer's hallucination that the 1080p version. But it looks better. Hard to wrap your head around. Interesting sidenote: Seems like an old gaming PC has an easier time rendering than a brand-new M1 Macbook Pro. That really surprised us both. Please send feedback, try big and small displays for comparison. Maybe dig up an old SD file from my archive and compare. Check out the incredible screencaps from the previous post.
